About Sharon

So… I’ve thought long and hard about sharing this information. The reason being is anyone who knows me well enough will know I don’t like the whole ‘whoa is me’ and I that’s what I want to avoid, but I do want to raise awareness and more so, raise some money for an amazing charity, which is why I have decided to share my story.

Six months ago I woke up to severe pain in my calves. Within a matter of days, I was in A&E and within 10 days I was unable to walk unaided. I had lost feeling in both of my feet from my shins down and couldn’t get my feet to work.

It turns out I have a rare autoimmune disease called Churg-Strauss Syndrome, which is a form of vasculitis. Only 1-5 people in every 1Million in the UK are likely to get this. (I always knew I was one in a million! ????). For me, this disease was attacking my healthy nerves in my feet, hence the loss of use.

Fast forward six months later and I am well on the way to getting better. I am now able to walk without the help of others, but I do need some aids to help me walk safely. I lost a lot of strength and muscle but that is returning each day. Helping with my rehabilitation is a challenge I have recently started … 1 Million steps in 100 days – a really big challenge for me, but I am determined to do as much as I can and help raise money for this amazing charity - Centre for Mental Health.

The biggest challenge I have faced has not been the physical impact, it’s more often been the mental challenge. I have been so lucky with the support I have had from friends, family and loved ones, but not everyone is, so we need the help of charities like Centre for Mental Health to help those who need it, no more so in the next few years with the fall out of Covid-19.
