On December 4th 2019, aged 34, Jordan Phillip took his own life at his home in Horsforth, near Leeds.
Jordan had lived with a diagnosis of clinical anxiety and depression for more than 4 years but no one expected what happened on the winter's day in 2019.
Suicide is the biggest killer of men and women under 35 - not cancer, diabetes or heart attack, not even road traffic accidents claim as many lives as suicide does for this age group.
The Jordan Legacy was established in memory of Jordan, with a mission to move towards a 'Zero Suicide Society', which by our definition is one that is willing and able to do all it can to prevent all preventable suicides.
Across the UK, 6000+ people die by suicide each year, and this has been the case for the past 16 years with no downward movement in the annual death toll. In 2024 the ONS published suicide numbers from 2022-2023, which showed a 6% overall increase in suicide deaths in England - 5% for men and 8% for women. In fact, an average increase in suicide deaths across virtually every gender age group.
For each death by suicide, there is a devastating ripple effect, which impacts the lives, on average, of 135 other people. Aside for the tragic human cost, a 2024 report published by Samaritans, shows that each death by suicide costs our economy £1.47 million - all suicides in the UK impact the UK economy annually by more than £10 billion - we need to do better and to do better we require much needed funds to save lives by preventing all preventable deaths by suicide.
At The Jordan Legacy, we want to help people have a shared sense of hope and a shared belief that we can make a difference, by considerably reducing the number of suicides (and suicide attempts) and moving towards a ‘Zero Suicide Society’.
Most suicides are preventable, so our goal must surely be to prevent most suicides!
Find us on:
Not everyone is affected by suicide but anyone can be affected by suicide. There is also a huge ripple effect.
An average of 135 people are impacted by each suicide death which means more than 800,000 people in the UK are affected by a suicide death every year.
For each suicide death, around 20 people make suicide attempts. Research suggests that most people who attempt to take their own lives do not want to die, they simply want to escape the intense mental or physical pain they are suffering. People in crisis often feel hopelessly trapped and need support through their crisis.
Take the Million Steps Challenge, feel good and do good by helping The Jordan Legacy work with those with lived experience of suicide, those already working in suicide prevention, governments, communities and workplaces to create hope through action and get the annual suicide death toll on a downward trend.
